Happy Friday, folks!

It’s the third Friday this January, which means only another, erm, *checks notes* six to go, and if you’ve already munched your way through the Christmas chocolate, and cleared out the last of the festive tipple, well, no one’s judging.

And whilst we’re still hard at work here at Maratopia, we did find time to fish out a few stories from the world wide web that we hope might perk your day up just a little.

📺 Netflix Reports Over 200M Subscribers Worldwide

They’ve been a major help for many of us since the pandemic began, along with Ben, Jerry and a certain Mr Kipling, so it’s no surprise they’ve seen an increase of 37 million subscribers worldwide in 2020, bringing their grand total to around 204 million. It’s suspected that major releases such as Tiger King, The Queen’s Gambit and most recently Bridgerton have contributed to these impressive figures.

🏫 Networks Offer Free E-Learning Access For Schoolkids

We’re all adapting as best we can in Lockdown 3.0, and schools are no exception. As classes take place online, major mobile networks O2, Three, Vodafone, Virgin, EE, Sky, BT and Plusnet have all confirmed they will grant free access to Oak National Academy, a digital education resource. BT have also confirmed free access to BBC Bitesize as part of the ‘Lockdown Learning’ initiative.

⚡ Cars That Charge The Future!

This week, tech start-up StoreDot have announced an electric car battery that fills up as fast as a petrol tank. At current, electric cars can take between 8 and 12 hours to charge fully, and Tesla boss Elon Musk has in the past called for faster charging on these vehicles. StoreDot confirmed they had produced a thousand sample batteries and were already in talks with major car manufacturers, although we could still be a few years away from a market rollout.

📱 LG Steps Away From Smartphones

After their last few releases have been met with commercial indifference, LG have indicated this week that they will no longer be producing smartphones. In an internal memo to employees, CEO Kwon Bong-Seok wrote that ‘since competition in the global market for mobile devices is getting fiercer, it is about time for LG to make a cold judgement and the best choice.”
