Good morning Maratopians!

We’re back to that time of the week once again! The weekend is upon us, and our Friday Fiver is back with five fun factoids from this week’s web happenings.

These stories contain a dash of positivity, a dose of intrigue, and are of course compiled with our keen eye for the curious occurrences that flew under the radar this week. Check them out!

🔊 Ikea Unveils Hidden Speaker

Leading audio manufacturers Sonos have teamed up with Ikea to create a gorgeous picture frame that hides a speaker inside. The frame, which conceals the speaker behind a work of art, has interchangeable fronts to suit your décor, and is part of a line of Ikea products which conceal sound systems. Other items in the range have included lamps and bookcases, but this is the company’s first collaboration with Sonos.

🖌️ Moving Google Doodle Wins 2021 Prize

The winner of the annual Doodle for Google competition has been announced this week, and the award goes to an 11th grade US teenager named Milo Golding. His Doodle was inspired by his charity Sanguine Path, which aids children and young people with bereavement. Milo started the charity after the loss of his own father at a young age, and says it has helped to bring him hope during his grief.

🍏 NASA Asks Public To Name Space Flight Dummy

NASA’s Artemis I mission is expected to set off into space later this year, with its first non-human passenger abroad the Orion capsule. The manikin – or ‘moonikin’, as it has been affectionately christened – still needs a name, and the space agency has put it to the public to decide from eight pre-chosen names (and no, none of them are Boaty McBoatface). The polls will take place on social media, with a final vote on 29th June.

🎮 Advertising in VR

This week Facebook have announced that for the first time they’ll be trialling advertisements in their virtual reality platform Oculus. Initial trials will involve just one game, with a view to rolling them out across further titles in the future. As with Facebook’s on-site adverts, users will still be able to mute and hide adverts, but the move could mark a new era for virtual reality.

📺 New Netflix Viewing

The ever-updating Netflix schedule has introduced a few exciting new additions this week, with more to come. In amongst their latest viewing treats is Headspace’s Unwind Your Mind, a choose-your-own-adventure mindfulness experience, the popular Silver Linings Playbook, and Russian period epic Silver Skates, a loose retelling of Romeo & Juliet set in St Petersburg.
