10 Christmas Flicks For Your Yuletide Viewing

It’s the perfect combo – a mince pie, mulled wine and a Christmas movie.

But with so many classics that can be called upon time and time again for a festive night in, which one is the ultimate Yuletide viewing experience?

In no particular order, we’ve put together a top ten guide to the best Christmas films for the festive season. We’ve stuck with the conventional definition of ‘Christmas film’ here, so you won’t find Die Hard or the Harry Potter series – sorry not sorry.

But if you find any glaring omissions, send us a tweet and we’ll stuff your Crimbo flick suggestions in our TV schedule sack tout suite!

#1 The Santa Clause (1994)

Tim Allen becomes Santa by accident. It’s a learning curve.

Once you get past the slightly sinister premise of the man who killed Santa, this standout flick is funny, festive and heart-warming.

#2 Miracle On 34th Street

The best version of Miracle is hotly debated amongst film aficionados, and we’re not going to weigh in on this one.

But if you’re undecided, check out this side-by-side comparison of some key scene from the two films:

#3 A Christmas Carol

Too many excellent versions of this classic Dickens story to name just one the favourite. But honourable mentions must go to The Muppets’ Christmas Carol, and the oft-forgotten Bill Murray modernisation, Scrooged.

#4 Love, Actually (2003)

Forget your favourite Christmas film – what’s your favourite storyline in Love, Actually? Each of these interconnected tales of love tug on the heartstrings in one way or another.

#5 The Snowman (1982)

If this was a list of the best animated Christmas films, there’s no doubt that The Snowman, alongside The Snowman & The Snowdog, would be right at the top.

#6 Elf (2003)

Will Ferrell plays a human raised by elves in this eccentric family comedy about self-discovery and spreading Christmas cheer.

The trailer below, however, reimagines the holiday classic as a haunting psychological thriller.

#7 It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

No list is complete without this black and white classic.

In 2019 it was reported that Sir Paul McCartney was producing a musical based on the Oscar-nominated hit, but production appears to be halted on the project due to the events of 2020. Maybe next year!

#8 Home Alone (1990)

As if we wouldn’t count Home Alone amongst our favourites. Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.

#9 The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

A relative newcomer to the Christmas film scene, this Netflix original stars Kurt Russell as a Santa who seeks help from a teenage boy and his little sister to save Christmas.

#10 How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Based on the 1957 book by Dr Seuss, The Grinch spent four weeks in the top spot at the Box Office back in the winter of ’00.
