10 Seasonal Songs For Your Festive Playlist
The most wonderful time of the year isn’t complete without a Christmas playlist.
From festive sales to Christmas specials, no corner of December goes untouched by a Crimbo hit – they are impossible to avoid.
In keeping with this spirit, we’ve put together a quick selection for your Christmas Day/Zoom Party/mulled-wine-fuelled karaoke that contains a few of our favourites from over the years – listen along via our Spotify.
We kept it short at 10 tracks so this is by no means an exhaustive list of the ultimate seasonal hits, but if you see your favourite missing, send us a tweet.
#1 All I want for Christmas – Mariah Carey
Supposedly, Mariah’s chart-topping hit took only fifteen minutes to write back in 1994, and makes her around $500,000 every year in royalties. Fifteen minutes well spent, we say.
#2 It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas – Michael Bublé
Bublé and bubbly – the perfect combo for a wintery night. This particular track is a favourite from the crooner’s 2011 Christmas album, imaginatively titled Christmas.
#3 Last Christmas – Wham!
The rules of Whamageddon are simple – players must make it from December 1st to December 24th without hearing the song ‘Last Christmas’ once. Or click here instead to go straight to Whamhalla.
#4 Merry Xmas Everybody – Slade
It’s not Christmas until Noddy Holder pops on his Santa hat, shouts “It’s Chriiiiistmaaaaas,” and vanishes for another year. Bit like Santa himself, really.
#5 Santa Tell Me – Ariana Grande
It might not be a traditional anthem, but this pop princess’s festive offering re-enters the charts near enough every year, making her a mandatory inclusion on any modern Christmas mix.
#6 Fairytale of New York – The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl
While The Pogues might seem like the least likely candidates for producing a Christmas classic, no playlist is complete without this folk-punk ditty.
#7 Step into Christmas – Elton John
This classic was the ninth most played song of the 00s, and peaked at Number 1 on the Billboard Christmas Charts in the US. For all that, it often gets a bit forgotten about, but not by us.
#8 Run Rudolph Run – Chuck Berry
An ode to Santa’s favourite reindeer, this jaunty little track by a master of rock and roll didn’t even make it into the top 50 upon release. But it has since been featured in countless Christmas flicks and earned its rightful status as a classic festive tune.
#9 Walking In The Air – Aled Jones
The Snowman is essential Christmas Eve viewing, and what better reminder is there of everyone’s favourite kitchen roll character than this masterpiece by boy soprano Aled Jones?
#10 The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You) – Nat King Cole
‘Chestnuts roasted on an open fire,’ is one of the cosiest mental images proposed by any Christmas song in history. We’ve never had them either, but they sound good. Have a listen.
Go on, what have we missed? Send us a tweet or leave us a comment on Facebook to let us know what our list is lacking.
Oh – and a Merry Christmas to you all!
